Module 2 Unit 2 Reading  An adventure in Africa 教案

 

Teaching aims

1. Knowledge and skills

♦ To help students gain some information about an adventure in Africa so that they can enhance their reading abilities

♦ To help students learn how to write an informal letter.

   2. Procedures and approaches

♦ To develop the students’ reading abilities in gaining and coping with information properly by skimming, careful reading, discussion, etc.

♦ To provide the students with the opportunity of “learning English by doing it” so that they can analyze and solve the problems scientifically by task-based learning, autonomic learning, cooperation, and exploration.

   3. Emotions and values

♦ Students are expected to become more aware of how to make an adventurous trip.

♦ Students are expected to develop the consciousness of cooperation and exploration.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Lead-in

Good morning, everyone! Today there are some teachers coming to our classroom to have a lesson with us together. Now let’s give them a warm welcome, OK?

People have always been seeking interesting, exciting and challenging things to do. Now let’s look at some of the activities.

1. What kind of activities are full of adventure?

Ss look at the pictures.

Good. So adventure is an unusual, exciting or dangerous experience, journey or series of events.

2. Have you ever thought of visiting Africa one day?

  What words come to your mind when we talk about Africa?

  Exciting, mysterious, attractive

What interests you about Africa?

Camels in the desert, the pyramids in Egypt, the Pharaohs, the Africans, the elephants, giraffes and zebras in Africa.

(Show students some pictures about Africa.)

Then focus on the new words of places:

  Morocco, the Sahara Desert, the River Nile, Lake Victoria, Kenya, Tanzania (Kilimanjaro) Himalayas

(Provide the students with more information about the above places by linking the words to relevant slides.)

Step 2 Reading

Fast reading

1. Guide students to the Reading Strategy of this unit and then ask them some questions

Are dates included?      (Yes/No) (Yes)

Is the reader’s surname addressed? (Yes/No) (No)

Are friendly greetings usually used at the beginning of the letter? (Yes/No) (Yes)

Are past events mentioned? (Yes/No) (Yes)

Are jokes made in the letter? (Yes/No) (Yes)

Conclusion: It is an informal letter.

2. Get the students to read each paragraph quickly and found out the main idea.

Para1.      A. go to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Himalayas.

Para2.      B. go to travel down the River Nile after the trip by camel.

Para3.      C. go to travel on camels through the Sahara Desert.

Para4.      D. plan a trip during the holiday and go to visit Africa first.

Para5.      E. go on a trip to visit Africa in Kenya.

Para6.      F. try to get close to animals in Kenya.

Para7.      G. send postcards from different places we visit.

Step 3 Careful reading

Ask the students to read each paragraph more carefully to get detailed information, and then show the following exercises for them to finish:

Para1: True or false:

1. Toby would spend a few weeks traveling before he goes to university. (F)

2. After the trip to Africa, Colin will go to university. (F)

Para2: Answer the questions:

     Where to start:   London

Time:  15th July

Where to go:  Morocco/Sahara

How to go there: plane (from London to Morocco)   camel (through Sahara)

What to take: tents/ sleeping bags/ a flashlight

How long: six days

Para3: Answer questions

     1. What adventure activity will the writer try?  ( white-water rafting)

     2. What is white-water rafting like?  (dangerous, exciting)

     3. How to protect himself?   (helmet, lifejacket)

Para4-5: Fill in the missing words:

   In ________ , they’ll live with the ______ people in their villages , and eat and drink _________ they do , including cow’s _______.They’ll walk across the land, following the __________ of big animals . The guides will have guns for _________

  (Kenya, local, whatever, blood, tracks, defense)

Para6: Answer the questions:

   What will they do before mountain climbing? Why?

   (get plenty of rest, tiring, feel sick as the atmosphere gets thinner. )

Step 4. Task-based reading

After you read this passage, all of you probably have a better understanding of the text. Now, please read the text in silence and then fill in the form, using one word.

Step 6. Pair work

Please do pair work,one as Toby,the other as a reporter from our school magazine. Toby will be interviewed about his travel plan by the reporter.

Toby:say something about the travel plan in Africa.

The reporter: interview Toby about his travel plan. You are interested in:Where will you go first? Will you go white-water rafting? Is it exciting? Are you going to Kenya?etc.

Ask Ss to act out the dialogue.

6. Discussion

OK, now let’s have a discussion. Suppose you are also going to take an adventure travel in China, please discuss in groups of six about where to travel and what to take, and also imagine how you’ll travel and what you will do during you travel.

 

Step 7 Homework

1. E-mail your friend about an adventure in China.

2. Write a letter about your traveling schedule about an adventure in China.
